why Jinnh demanded for a muslim state being secular ?
Jinnah, was a true secular muslim. His lifestyle was out & out like an english man. In respect of religion, he was very much liberal. . Mahatma Gandhi, himself, called him as a most secular muslim during that period.
Then, how, he claimed for Pakistan, a seperate state for the muslim from the british? To understand it, we have to analyse the political situation of the then british India.
Mr. Jinnah, began his political careers joining All India national congress. This indicates his secular mind set up.
During the khilafat movement in Turky, under the leadership of Kamal ata turk, Indian muslims en mas, supported the movement, whereas, INC, did'nt support it. This was Mr.Jinnah's first difference of opinion with the leadership of congress. Later, when, by din't of liberal attitudes of the british decision, of introduction of provincial administration autonomy, the Indian muslims learnt for their status in a hindu majority state. When the results of all the provincial autonomous councils were out, it was seen that in most of the states , the INC got majority. But, before election, congress agreed to take muslim members within their council of ministers, which was later denied. It was durjng this time, All India muslim league was born, under the leadership of Mr. M A jinnah.
Even, when, the congress leadership was discussing the future character of independent India, Mr. Jinnah was in favour of introduction of
Federal system of government by dividing India into six divisions. And baring foreign affairs, defence, fiscal system, all powers will be given to the provincial governments. Within this federal structure, if in future, any region wants to opt out of the federation, it will be permitted. But this advice was also denied, by the INC. Lastly, it is said that, if, between the post of prime-ministership & president ship, at least, one was offered to Mr.Jinnah, perhaps, partition would have avoided.
