Is Chinese AI App DeepSeek better than ChatGpt ?

The Rise of Chinese AI App DeepSeek
The emergence of the Chinese AI app DeepSeek has sent shockwaves through financial markets, prompting US President Donald Trump to call it "a wake-up call" for the US tech industry. DeepSeek’s claim that its R1 artificial intelligence (AI) model was developed at a fraction of the cost of its competitors has raised critical questions about the industry's future. This revelation has also led to a decline in the stock value of some of the world's largest tech companies. Within just a week of its launch, DeepSeek has become the most downloaded free app in the US. But how does it compare to its well-established and seemingly much more expensive US counterparts, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini?
How DeepSeek Compares to ChatGPT
One of ChatGPT’s most popular use cases is assisting users with writing tasks—whether summarizing information, generating blog posts, or structuring content for professional settings. To put DeepSeek to the test, I asked both ChatGPT and DeepSeek to summarize the greatest Scottish football players of all time and draft a blog post on the topic.
DeepSeek responded within seconds, providing a top ten list, with Kenny Dalglish—the legendary Liverpool and Celtic forward—ranked first.
The AI also detailed each player’s position, clubs, and key achievements. Interestingly, it included two non-Scottish players: Danish star Brian Laudrup (a Rangers legend) and Swedish icon Henrik Larsson, noting that Larsson is often considered among Scottish football greats due to his impact at Celtic.
ChatGPT produced a similar list, with "King Kenny" once again at the top. Its blog post provided a well-structured, detailed summary of each player's career, concluding:
"While the game has changed over the decades, the impact of these Scottish greats remains timeless."
For this informal test, DeepSeek proved to be a strong competitor to ChatGPT.
DeepSeek’s Impact on Coding
The rise of advanced AI models has also significantly impacted the coding community. When ChatGPT suffered an outage last week, developers flooded X (formerly Twitter) with humorous posts, lamenting their reliance on the tool.
How does DeepSeek compare in this field?
Javier Aguirre, an AI researcher at Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, South Korea, shared his experience on LinkedIn, stating: "I am quite impressed with DeepSeek. While coding, we often push AI chatbots to their limits. Today, I had a complex problem that even ChatGPT-4 struggled to solve. I gave DeepSeek a try, and it solved it instantly and precisely."
He also emphasized that combining AI models can enhance coding efficiency—a view echoed by Addy Osmani, Google’s Head of Chrome Developer Experience.
In a LinkedIn post to his 208,000 followers, Osmani praised the combination of DeepSeek with Claude Sonnet, a model developed by US AI firm Anthropic, which received a $4 billion investment from Amazon in 2023. He stated:
"Code with AI? DeepSeek R1 + Claude Sonnet may be the best new hybrid coding model. Yes, engineers are using them together." Osmani also noted that DeepSeek is significantly cheaper than both Claude Sonnet and OpenAI’s latest model, making it an attractive option for developers.
The Future of AI: A Global Power Shift?
DeepSeek’s rapid rise has raised global concerns about China's growing influence in AI. Governments and businesses alike are now reassessing their strategies to stay competitive.
With DeepSeek offering cutting-edge capabilities at a lower cost, could this mark a turning point for the AI industry? The coming months will reveal whether US tech giants can maintain their dominance—or whether DeepSeek is just the beginning of a global AI shift.
